What Inspires Us

A Dribbling Wizard

Kids are amazing. They have so much energy and so much talent, just waiting to burst out of them.

They're carefree, they're honest and they know how to have a good time. But this kid? He's having a good time and working toward his future—a future, he hopes, in the NBA.

Meet fifth grader, Jaylin Fleming from Chicago. His moves on the basketball court aren't the only thing that amazed us. His faith and perseverance inspired us. He's 10 years old and he knows what he wants. He knows what he's striving to achieve. And most importantly, he believes he can do it.

TED Talks

Have you ever met TED? Bet you a million bucks he's the most interesting person you'll ever meet.

Just to name a few, he's well versed in the impact of traffic signs, social psychology, storytelling, science, philosophy, health care, creatures of the deep sea, the benefits of gaming and advances in prosthetics.

Sandra Bullock: An Oscar Moment

Last Sunday night, the 82nd annual Academy Awards, the Oscars, was held amidst much glamour, glitz and hoopla.

But the evening was not without its inspiring moments, the best of which has to have been Sandra Bullock’s acceptance speech. She managed to be funny, gracious, emotional and touching, reminding us that celebrities can have beauty, brains, talent and heart.

Listen now to her inspiring and moving tribute to her fellow actresses and to some very special moms.

Oh, and make sure you’ve got Kleenex handy!

A Winter's Tale

As I'm writing this, I'm sitting in a cozy nook of my New York City apartment, hot tea in hand, watching the snow fall steadily outside my window.

Although I'm supposed to be working from home (and I am!), I can't help wanting to drop everything and pick up a particular book that I know for me would turn this ordinary snow day into something infinitely more magical.

Miley Cyrus' "The Climb"

Now just hold on. Wait a minute. Hear me out. If you know who Miley Cyrus is thanks to a pre-teen in your life or simply by seeing her face, well, everywhere, then you might be tempted to quit reading. We are inspired by Miley Cyrus? Bear with me.

If you don't know who Miley Cyrus is, welcome to the world above your rock. She is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, but more importantly, Miley is the reigning teen queen.

Finding Grace

In her latest book, Finding Grace, Donna VanLiere shares her true story of "losing your way in life...and finding it again."

You may know VanLiere from her popular Christmas Hope books (and the TV movies made from them). Like that series, Finding Grace is beautifully written, but this is a much more personal tale.

Touched by an Angel

In case you didn't know, The Hallmark Channel has brought back Touched by an Angel and we couldn't be happier.

Uniform-ly Creative Giving

You know how it is some days. You wake up and just can't figure out what to wear. Wouldn't it be great if the time and effort you put into finally pairing that brown plaid skirt with this melon-colored flouncy top could be harnessed for the greater good?

Meet Sheena Matheiken. She enlisted her pal Eliza Starbuck to design a simple black dress, which was then duplicated for each day of the week. In May, Sheena began wearing this uniform, combining it with chic accessories mostly donated from vintage stores or designers.

The Dash

With the passing of cultural icons like Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Michael Jackson in the last week, many of us have been reflecting on what we knew of their lives and how they impacted us—Farrah with her beauty and poise, Ed with his ability to make us laugh, and Michael, though he had a troubled personal life, with the ability to inspire us with music and dance.

Love, Love, Love

There's something about music that always stays with me. Whether it's the melody itself or the harmony of the singer's voice or the lyrics that stand out from the chords beneath them, music resonates and reminds, it stirs up memories, feelings and possibilities—it's a language all its own.

I have to admit that up until the time I had to choose a major in college, I wanted to be a singer. Not because of the fame. Or the money. Or the masses of fans watching. Because I genuinely love to sing—and that hasn't changed.
