A Mini Father’s Day Miracle

For Father’s Day, Diana Aydin can’t remember any earth-shattering miracles to honor her father. But she remembers an ongoing series of love and care from him, and that’s huge.

For Diana Aydin, a Father's Day miracle resides in a pair of tiny sunglasses

Father’s Day is coming up and I’ve been searching for a good fatherhood miracle to blog about. I tried to think of something wondrous involving my dad, but I was stumped.

Don’t get me wrong. That’s not to say my dad hasn’t witnessed and experienced many miracles. I’ve actually written about quite a few. But I couldn’t think of anything huge, earth-shattering. Like a time he parted the Hudson River. Or fed our many, many Turkish family members with just one bag of Pita bread.

But then an image popped into my head. A miniature pair of sunglasses.

Diana Aydin and her dad.You see, when I was 6 years old, I had a problem crossing my eyes. Every week, my dad would accompany me to the eye doctor, who took me through special exercises to correct the issue. This went on for about six months.

The sessions were boring, but my dad managed to make the experience fun. He’d entertain me in the waiting room, and we’d analyze the songs playing on the radio. (Our favorite was the ’90s classic “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxette.)

At the end of every appointment, the doctor would give away these little neon sunglasses pins. For whatever reason, I was obsessed with them. In fact, if you look at my childhood photos from that time, you’d probably spot a pair pinned to my dress!

It’s been more than 20 years, and my epic sunglasses collection has since disappeared. My dad and I no longer belt out “It Must Have Been Love.” Instead, whenever I go home to visit, we’ll just sit and chat by his desk.

He’s a bit of a neat freak, so I pretend I’m going to mess up his stacks of folders and paperwork. Before I leave, I always open his top left desk drawer, looking for just one thing amidst all the paper clips and pens. I can’t help but smile when I see it.

A mini pair of bright yellow sunglasses. He’s kept it all this time.

I’ve had my share of health problems over the years. My dad has accompanied me to more waiting rooms than I can count. Maybe that pin isn’t an earth-shattering miracle. But whenever I see it, I can’t help but think of my dad’s love for me. And all the special times we’ve shared, even in a waiting room.

To me, that’s one of the best miracles of all.
