  • On Rosh Hashanah, Remembering that God Is in Control

Wednesday night marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year, the holiday known as Rosh Hashanah. According to Jewish tradition, this marks the 5772nd birthday of the world.

On this day, the Hebrew Scriptures tell us that God opens the Book of Life and writes down what fate will befall us in the year to follow.

However, it is not until 10 days later, on the holiday of Yom Kippur, that the book is sealed. Therefore, tonight and the ten days that follow are meant to be a time of reflection and repentance for our sins, misdeeds and broken promises.

  • Mysterious Ways in the News

As the editor in charge of finding Mysterious Ways stories, I regularly scan the news for out-of-the-ordinary occurrences, strange moments that seem to defy the odds.

Sometimes, I find things that boosts my faith ... other times, well, let's just say I'm not entirely convinced that divine images appear on breakfast food.

Three items from the news caught my eye this week. Are they only coincidences? Or evidence of a greater power at work? You decide:

  • Faith from Beyond the Ashes

Ten years. It doesn’t quite feel like that to me. Instead, September 11, 2001, feels like both yesterday and a million years ago.

Bonnie McEneaney, the author of the Mysterious Ways story in this month’s Guideposts, lost her husband, Eamon, on 9/11. For her, that date will always feel, on some level, like yesterday. But Bonnie has changed so much since that day that it seems much more than a decade has passed.
