  • Keeping Faith Going in Summer

Summer can be a time where we relax our spiritual routines a little and let things go. Maybe you attend church regularly during the year, but now you’re missing more days than you think you should. Perhaps you aren’t as involved in a volunteer activity that motivates and sustains you. Or possibly you’ve let your exercise routine go.

  • Do You Use a Prayer Book?

More and more people these days seem to be using “fixed hour prayer” or structured prayer books to keep themselves in touch with God. I often mark their rise in popularity in the late 1990s with the publication of The Divine Hours by Phyllis Tickle, former PW religion editor and now a popular intellectual in religion.

  • The World and the Cup

I’m not much of a soccer fan, but I couldn’t help but notice some of the coverage this year, and especially of the final game, when Spain beat the Netherlands 1 – 0. The announcer on our local New York television station pointed out that this had been the third trip to the final game for the Dutch, and still no win. The camera showed legions of local Dutch fans, both men and women, decked out in the colors of their team, rooting them on. Somehow I missed any images of the incredible disappointment they must have experienced at the loss.
