  • God Never Closes the Gate

On a hot Friday afternoon last week, I was walking to a commuter train at the Hoboken, New Jersey, depot when something small crashed into my legs from behind.

I turned and saw a little girl, maybe two or three years old, being pulled up by the limber arm of her mother, who was rushing to get to a platform not 15 yards away.

One thing you might know about trains: They don’t wait for anybody. I’ve seen some pretty angry people to prove it.

  • Asking for Help, and Accepting It

It’s September 11, 2001, and one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center has just come down with a sound described as deep rumbling thunder and crashing glass. A great cloud of dust expands over lower Manhattan, choking the lungs and irritating the eyes of everyone it covers.

A woman escapes down a flight of stairs to an empty subway platform. She hears someone else and cries out, “I can’t see! My eyes are full of dirt. I don’t want to fall into the subway.”
