Mt. Hermon Writer’s Conference

The Home to Heather Creek editor shares workshops to see at the event.

The past few days, I’ve been gearing up for the Mt. Hermon Christian Writer’s Conference, which I’ll be attending early next month. I’ll be meeting with authors and agents, and learning more about what’s going on in the world of inspirational book publishing.

I’m excited about the conference for several reasons—for one, it’s supposed to be one of the best out there. For another, the conference takes place at a gorgeous, relaxing retreat center in the Santa Cruz mountains, just a little ways south of San Jose, California.

San Jose is home to me, and I’ve actually been to Mt. Hermon before, because I went to summer camp there with my youth group when I was in high school. My memories of the place revolve mostly around belly flop contests and dance-offs, and though I suspect the conference will be a bit more grown-up than high school camp, I’m really looking forward to returning to a place that shaped my spiritual journey in so many ways.

I’m also teaching a couple workshops at the conference, and for some reason I’m kind of looking forward to that too. When I first found out I had to teach, I almost tried to get out of the conference altogether, but when I sat down to think about what kind of wisdom I could possibly impart to a group of writers more experienced and talented than myself, I realized that there are a few things I know about.

I know about how to pull together a book series. I spend a good part of my day creating, fleshing out, and editing fiction series. I know about that. I realized I also I know a fair amount about writing mysteries. I’ve never written one myself, but I have edited a ton of them, and drawn some of my own conclusions and rules about what makes a good, well-plotted, fast-paced mystery.

I proposed two workshops—Writing The Series and Writing The Mystery—and I’m actually getting excited about what I’m going to say and how I’m going to present the material. It’s going to be fun.

If you’re a writer, you should think about checking out the conference! You can find out more information here, and I hope to meet some of you there.
