Awakening His “Better Angels”

The people he has met and interviewed for these inspiring stories continue to motivate him every day.

Dick Schneider called me this afternoon, just to say hi, and it took me a minute to remember that he wasn’t calling from an office down the hall: He’d retired from Guideposts after almost 40 years. Still I picture his big athletic hands stretched out over his old typewriter, tapping out yet another inspiring story.

We caught up on the latest Guideposts news, and Dick told me about a couple of angels stories he was trying to track down. “I’ll let you know as soon as I get all the details,” he promised. Dick was always on the lookout for a good story—there was no retiring from that.

After we hung up, I pulled An Abundance of Virtues: Stories About People Who Have Changed My Life out of the stack of books on my desk. Dick had sifted through hundreds of true inspirational stories he helped bring to life for Guideposts and collected the best of the best in this edition published by Inspiring Voices.

Of course I’d read the whole book. I was already working at Guideposts when a good number of them were published the first time around. But what I like to go back to every now and then was Dick’s introduction. He says that the people he met and interviewed for these stories motivate him every day and awaken his “better angels.” To this day.

I know what he means. But here’s something I’d add to the list of motivators: people I’ve worked with at Guideposts. Like Dick.
