All About Angels

Tell Us Your Story!

This afternoon the editors are getting together to plan the August issue of Guideposts. Tomorrow we’ll discuss which stories will fit best in the July/August issue of Angels. In the magazine business, scheduling ahead is the rule. Besides, we want to get a jump on things so we clear even more time this summer to devote to our fifth edition of the full-size special interest publication The Joys of Christmas.

In this year’s holiday special we’ve already decided to feature the Joys of God’s Love, the Family Table, Our American Troops and Nostalgia. The topics alone have thrown me into the Christmas spirit! And as long as I’m working on The Joys of Christmas, you’ll always find stories of Christmas angels.

If you have a Christmas story you’d like to tell the world, please send it to me at Guideposts, 16 E 34th St., New York, NY 10016, or submissions@guideposts.org. It’s definitely not too early.

My editorial calendar usually puts me at Christmas sometime in July. Already I’m having to remind myself that mid-March is not a time to worry about holiday shopping. Oh, but it is time to wish you a happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Colleen Hughes is the editor-in-chief of Angels on Earth. She's been at Guideposts for 20 plus years, and lives in a Hudson River town with her two daughters and two cats.

In 2001, I had an experience that I will never forget. I was watching the news when they had a segment about "Adopt a Pet" that the news would have on regularly on Friday evenings. I was not interested in getting anymore pets since I already had three cats. I was getting ready to go out and I was watching the segment and I saw Mandy, the yellow lab/huskie mix. I was sitting on my bed and I was putting my make up on and all of a sudden I heard a man's voice say in my left ear..."you need to get that dog." After that, I felt an uplifting feeling in my heart (like a flutter is the best I could describe it) and it stopped. It was a sensation that I never felt before. I couldn't really ignore what happened, but at the same time, I was talking to myself by saying that I can be a bit impulsive and that I do not even want a dog. So, I pretended like I didn't hear the voice. So, I continued to put my mascara on when my eyes focused back over to the television and I saw the news anchor petting Mandy and telling the public that she was such a nice dog...and ended up hearing the man's voice in my left ear telling me..."you need to get that dog." The fluttering started again in my heart. I could not ignore this a second time. I knew in my heart that it was my guardian angel giving me instructions from God. I sat on my bed and started to have a conversation with God. I told God that I was not a dog person and that I really didn't like them. However, in the same breath, I spoke to God and told him that I was going to obey his request. I also said that if Mandy is there tomorrow, I will get her from the shelter. Needless to say, I called the next day to the animal shelter to see if Mandy was still there. I discovered that Mandy had been at the shelter for months and it was a matter of time before they would put her down. The reason I found this out is an employee from the shelter recognized Mandy at a store where I could take my dog in with me to shop. The shelter employee told me the story about Mandy and how many months she was in the shelter and that the puppies she had went like hot cakes. If it weren't for my guardian angel insisting that I "get that dog," I would have never known how much I love dogs and Mandy wouldn't have been in my life. Mandy passed away in October, 2007. She was the best dog ever!! I had her cremated and I have her ashes with me. I have never heard again from my guardian angel, but I know that he is still around me, protecting me.
