Love Your Neighbor

When you’re good to people, God will make sure you come out on top.

The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:14)

OK, be honest. Do you ever feel like you’re always going the extra mile and being taken advantage of? By co-workers, friends, even family members? I’m pretty sure that all of us have felt that way at one time or another.

I imagine Abraham felt the same way when Lot chose the best piece of land. Remember that story found in Genesis 13?

Abraham followed God’s leading and gathered all of his family, traveling for months before finally arriving at the new land.

But after being there only a short while, they discovered there wasn’t enough land and water to support all of the people and flocks.

So Abraham told Lot, “We’re going to have to separate. Choose whichever piece of land you want, and I’ll take whatever is left over.”

Lot looked around and chose the beautiful, green, lush valley, leaving Abraham an old, dry field.

Really, Lot, really?!

Don’t you imagine that Abraham felt used and unappreciated? Here Abraham is kind enough to bring Lot and his family along with him on this journey of faith, and then when presented with an opportunity to bless Abraham and give him the best piece of land, Lot does just the opposite.

But that’s not where the story ends. See, God told Abraham to climb the highest mountain and look in every direction. Then He said, “As far as you can see, I’ll give it all to you.”

That’s the kind of God we serve.

When you’re good to people, God will make sure you come out on top. God sees you preferring other people. In fact, nothing you do goes unnoticed by Almighty God.

Just keep honoring others, and God will honor you.

Pray this with me:

Lord, help me to treat others the way You would have me to treat them. And, Father, help me not to get weary or frustrated in my well-doing; rather, help me to have the right attitude in all that I do so that I might be a good witness for You. I love You, Lord. In the Mighty Name of Your Son, Jesus, Amen.
