An Inspirational Milestone

Pop the corks or whatever! We hit a major milestone this week at Guideposts, indeed an inspiring milestone, and it will be my inspiring story for the week. We finally have 20,000 of you fans on Facebook and that’s a big number for any magazine. Thank you!

Even on cyber time Facebook happened quickly as social networking spread through the internet at warp speed. None of us were doing this just a few years back. And now we’re all connected.

Guideposts has always enjoyed an unusually close relationship with its users and readers. After all, our content comes primarily from you so a unique alliance exists between us unlike anything else in the publishing and media world. Social networking and user-generated-content was the platform Guideposts was built on originally in 1945 by Norman Vincent Peals and his wife, Ruth. The internet just had to catch up.

So what’s our next goal? 25,000? 50,000? I think we go even higher than that with your help and passion. Let’s double our fans this year.

FOOTNOTE (or should I say PAWNOTE?): I spent yesterday videotaping web spots for my new book The Promise of Hope: How True Stories of Hope and Inspiration Saved My Life and How They Can Transform Yours PLUS 9 Keys to Powerful Personal Change.

Millie joined me for the morning session of taping since she makes a few appearances in the book (we ordered a side of bacon to keep her happy). She was great but she has a habit of stealing scenes especially when she blocks my face in the camera shot or suddenly decides she needs to jump down off the interview couch to get a drink of water in the middle of a segment. Things went faster in the afternoon.

Anyway, you’ll be able to see these videos later next month on Guideposts.org and preorder a copy of my book The Promise of Hope. If you order early I’ll sign your copy personally.

This is exciting. I can’t wait for the release, officially slated for early April. And thanks to Kathleen, Karen, Zack and Pablo for their help and inspiration yesterday. And you too, Millie, as always.

I had the same exact experience. Spoke to reps in two places, finally cancelled mine and my mother's gift subscriptions, hoping she could get a free copy in Senior Living anyway. Privacy and security have been compromised in all spheres of our society. As always prayer is the best recourse, and honesty. "Remain vigilant...quiet as a dove, shrewd as a snake."

Ellen,
If you have the Sept. 2011 issue of Guideposts, you'll find info about this matter on page 88. But in case you don't have that issue on hand, here's a summary:

If a telemarketer contacts you and:
-Won't take no for an answer (we never pressure our readers for a decision)
-Asks for personal info (don't give your credit card or checking account info unless you're sure it's us)
-Pushes for immediate payment (we're always willing to bill you later)
-Is hesitant to give details about the subscription (price, number of issues, etc. -- all should made clear to you)
-Makes you uncomfortable in any way, just say "No thanks" and hang up.

You can always call us at 800-431-2344 for assistance, and if you hear from someone you think was misrepresenting themselves as GP, we'd very much appreciate hearing from you.

My husband and I have had a very upsetting experience in relationship with our Guideposts Subscription in the last few days. Satelite Magazine called and made themselves sound like someone employed by your organization. They knew that we had not renewed our subscription yet and offered to do that for us. My husband answered the phone and relayed the information to me that we could renew at $29.95 for 3 years. He had no idea what we usually paid for a year and I thought he meant it was a total of $29.95 for three years not yearly. In other words 3 years of Guideposts is costing us $90!! I thought it was some kind of special promotion you were offering. I talked to our credit card company and the only thing we can do is try to contact Salelite Mag. and try to cancel. This is the same information that your Customer "Care" rep gave to me. I think we both know just how far we will get with that even if I had any contact information for them. I know that your rep explain how this group is independent from your org. I differ with that in that someone from your organization had to give them the information that our subscription had run out. Also your organization is very willing to accept business generated by these deceptive methods and I believe that puts you in the same boat. I believe the Guidepost organization owes us some type of compensation. Subscription: John LaMorte, 920 Smith Road, Homer City, PA 15748
