An Inspired Yearly Gathering
I’m sorry if this blog is brief but I have a good excuse: I’m busy being inspired. I’ll explain.
The Guideposts organization is blessed with an amazing advisory group called the National Cabinet. This body actually originated years ago to assist Dr. Peale and the Peale Center in its activities. When the Peale Center became a part of Guideposts in 1995, the Cabinet came with it, much to Guideposts’ good fortune.
There are about 100 people on the Cabinet, a little more than half of whom are attending the national meeting in New York this weekend. These annual get-togethers are an incredible source of inspiration to me. I get to spend time with old friends and hear about the wonderful ways they are helping Guideposts. Many of our outreach programs such as Comfort Kits, OurPrayer and Military Outreach owe their success to the efforts of the Cabinet.
Cabinet members generously contribute to Guideposts but their support is so much more than financial. Their true contributions are their time, their passion and their prayers.
One of the first things I did when I became editor-in-chief of Guideposts was attend the annual Cabinet meeting and address the group. I was unbelievably nervous but their welcoming embrace warms my heart to this day. In fact I have to give a talk tonight, as I do every year, and though I’m not exactly nervous anymore I do still get a few butterflies.
I don’t know if you support our outreach efforts or not (if you do, thanks; if not, we could use your help) but I’d love to know what sort of nonprofit organizations and causes you do support and how. Post below. Meanwhile I have to get back to being inspired.

P.S. to my earlier note. I now see on the website that you all have an option to donate to the 'complimentary' subscriptions that go out to a variety of organizations in need. I have not had the opportunity to fully explore the website, but will now make use of this opportunity as well as the military donation; this will be faster than snail-mail. Thanks!
The two organizations I support without fail are River Valley Ranch and Maryland Society for Sight. River Valley Ranch is a Christian camp in Manchester, Md. They tell kids about Jesus while teaching them about horses, skateboarding and many other activities.
The Maryland Society for Sight was founded in 1909 to educate the citizens of Maryland about the importance of vision care. What makes them so amazing is they serve more than 40,000 people each year with only two full-time and three part-time employees on an annual budget less than $500,000. They have programs to provide vision screenings to children, adults and the homeless. The director of the homeless program works part-time, visits thirty different homeless agencies each month to provide eye examinations, coordinates volunteer doctors, orders, fits and delivers glasses to 360 homeless men and women every month and also directs the adult vision program. The adult vision program provides vision screenings for thousands of people each year at health fairs and company wellness events. And that is only the overview of all the duties she performs. They truly are making a difference.

Non-profits that I support on an ongoing basis and hope to increase my support are:
Intern. Fellowship for Christians and Jews;
Children International (sponsor 2 children-since I have none of my own);
Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch - Bend OR;
Local food shelter -The Wilkinson's Center;
oh and our local no-kill shelter - Operation Kindness.
I think that's it?
This year I am going to send you all money (this month) for the Military Guidepost sub. I was going to take on another subscription of the magazine to just leave for someone to find, but I would prefer to have copies sent to our military. What about considering doing a subscription option like you do for the military, but for the elderly that may be on fixed incomes and possibly can't afford a subscription???
I hope everyone has a wonderful time at the Writer's Workshop stating 10/8. I submitted but didn't make it this time, BUT maybe in 2012??? I have to admit after I wrote my story and hit the send key, just how personal my story was to me; but it was none-the-less cathartic for me. :~)
Ooops - I should say all of my support at this time is financial since all but Wilkinson's and Operation kindness are non-local charities.
I do hope, hope, hope!! one day to go visit my Children Intern. kids :~)
