Inspire Us

Hi, y’all, I’m just back from friendly Greenville, South Carolina, where I got to spend time with a great group of GUIDEPOSTS fans at Faith Night, held at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive, a minor league baseball team in the Boston Red Sox farm system.

Grand Central Cathedral

My favorite cathedral in New York City is not St. Pat’s or St. John’s. My favorite New York cathedral is Grand Central station.

No, you’re right, it’s not exactly a church but it is a kind of basilica of humanity, both a terminus and a crossroads for upwards of a million people a day. And there is no place I like to visit more than Grand Central.

The Convincer

Who doesn’t dread being publicly caught at our worst moments? This used to be a remote fear but with the internet, not so much anymore. Facebook is the great digital fishbowl. Which brings me to the subject of Josh Hamilton, the July cover, and some reports (with very unfortunate photos) that recently surfaced online.

Bark If You Can Read This

I’ve been hanging out a lot lately at the new Guideposts.com Prayers for Pets page. I’m constantly checking who’s been added to the list and what the pet looks like.

I’m especially into the photos. Who thought cruising a pet page could be so addictive? Now I know why people spend so much time on Petfinder.com—it’s the pictures and the stories, and isn’t a prayer a story?

Totally Unexpected

It arrived today. A nice summer shirt. Out of nowhere. Totally unexpected. Okay, not quite.

Prayer for Pets

What has four legs (more or less) and needs prayers? Probably someone you know.

I’ve said it before—we’re a praying company. GUIDEPOSTS receives hundreds of thousands of prayer requests a year, each and every one prayed for by name and need by staff and by thousands of volunteers around the world. If you have a need, we’ll pray 24/7. That’s the deal.

Tough Times Revisited

A couple blogs ago I was bemoaning the wet weather we were having this summer, the Biblical deluge, especially on weekends. It wasn't just that it was raining on weekends; it was raining HARDER on the weekend than the rest of the week. So now that we are entering our second perfect summer weekend I think it is only fair of me to acknowledge the blessing of perfect weather. Today is gorgeous!

Best Trait

The other day somebody asked me what I thought my best trait was. The question took me by surprise. Even more surprising was my answer.

Not that it came to me very quickly. I’m probably not the easiest person to get personal information out of, not really, despite the role I play here at GUIDEPOSTS. Because what I do is so public I’ve also learned to be quite guarded.

Ed Thomas and a Test of Faith

I was editing a story for our September issue by former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan about her website that features good, uplifting news stories when I got a terrible news alert on my screen: Ed Thomas, a revered high school football coach in Parkersburg, Iowa, had been shot to death in the school’s weight room.

Talk About the Weather

It’s a bore to complain about the weather but I don’t know if it’s ever rained so much in New York as it has over the past couple of weeks.

The rain has been virtually ceaseless and as much as I adore Millie it can be an olfactory challenge to live with a wet Golden Retriever in a small Manhattan apartment for days at a time, though Millie doesn’t seem to mind.
