No One Like You

What makes it difficult to be the person God made you to be?

If you travel the whole world over, in country after country, amid the teeming millions of this earth, you will never find a person quite like yourself.

Although, there is an old belief that somewhere on this planet there is someone who looks like you–maybe not exactly but close enough to be your twin. (Two of me would have driven my mother crazy!)

Even when two people look alike the fact is that each individual is unique as each snowflake that drops from sky.

In Psalms 139 the author declares in verses 13-14:

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous–how well I know it.

Let me put it this way, to the best of our knowledge from the beginning of time itself, there has never been anyone quite like you or me. Yet it takes us so long to accept who God made us to be.

Some people wish they were the celebrity on the magazine cover or the family member with the great position along with the salary. Learning to be myself has and continues to be the greatest challenge of being me. I once heard a speaker say, “When you get to heaven, God will ask you, why weren’t you happy being yourself?

Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his famous essay of self-reliance writes, “Imitation is suicide.” If you try to be anyone other than yourself, you kill your own personality; you actually kill your own soul.

One thing is for sure when you try to be someone else in life, you will fail at it. Young David rejected King Saul’s armor when he faced Goliath. Instead he was himself, a shepherd boy with a sling in his hand. You know the outcome.

Do you find it hard being yourself? What makes it difficult to be the person God made you to be? In the same Psalm the writer concludes, “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!”

My prayer is, “Lord give us courage to be ourselves as you created us to be.”
