Have You Received an Inexplicable Message from God?
Every Thursday, a syndicated religious advice column called “The God Squad” appears in newspapers across the country. It’s written by Marc Gellman, senior rabbi at Temple Beth Torah in Melville, New York. For years, Rabbi Gellman co-wrote the column with his good friend Monsignor Thomas Hartman until Hartman’s health declined due to Parkinson’s disease.
Last week’s article concerned signs from God. A reader wrote to Rabbi Gellman:
“A few weeks ago, I was told I might have cancer and needed a biopsy. ... I silently asked, addressing no deity in particular, for a sign that I'd be cancer-free. I wanted to be certain of the sign, so I asked to see something uncommon: a tiger with the face first and the body behind.
After dinner, I found myself flipping channels when I landed on a baseball game, the Texas Rangers vs. the Detroit Tigers. As I watched the game, for a moment the camera panned to a realistic statue of a tiger at Detroit Stadium (face first, body behind it). Two weeks later, I got my test results. I'm cancer-free.”
Rabbi Gellman responded with a story he’s rarely told, about his own “tiger sign” from God—one that changed his life forever:
“Twenty-four years ago, at Passover/Easter time, I was living in New York, serving as a rabbi, when I was offered the same position at a synagogue in Florida. It was a large synagogue, it had a school with many children, and it was near very good golf courses. For some reason, I just couldn't make a decision. So, for the first and only time in my life, I asked God for a sign.
The next day, I went over to News 12 Long Island to do a brief interview. Passover and Easter were close together that year and the newsperson wanted to ask me and some priest about the differences ... I replied, 'There are no chocolate bunnies in Passover and there's no horseradish in Easter.' Obviously, my mind was somewhere else.”
After the taping, Rabbi Gellman spent a long time talking with the priest. Before saying goodbye, he told the priest that he seemed like a nice guy, but unfortunately, they wouldn’t see each other again. “I’m accepting a new position in Florida,” the rabbi said.
The priest looked at him and said in a quiet but firm voice, “You are not going there.”
“Are you in the habit of intruding in other people's lives?” the rabbi asked incredulously.
“I've never said anything like this before,” the priest responded. “But last night, in my dreams, God came to me and said I'd be meeting someone today and that I was supposed to tell him, ‘You are not going, because I'm not through with you here.’ ”
The rabbi was speechless. This was his sign. "I called the Florida synagogue and declined the offer. Asked why, I said, 'I asked God for a sign and God sent me an angel to deliver the message.' The reply was something like, 'Rabbi, we're glad you turned us down, because you're nuts.' "
And who was this priest who delivered God’s message? Monsignor Thomas Hartman.
The rabbi and the priest quickly became best friends. Until Hartman’s retirement in 2007, the God Squad used their diverse knowledge of faith to help people around the country answer their spiritual questions.
Now Rabbi Gellman asks his readers to pray for his friend. You can learn about Thomas Hartman and his foundation for Parkinson’s research at his website.

Ihave enjoyed reading your stories and comments. I have a wonderful small church and we are truly a family in Christ.
We have survived several low points but God always sends us someone to help and lead us. Today was our current priest's 70th birthday and the whole congregation turned out to celebrate and put on a wonderful potluck dinner. We are truly blessed and I thank God each night for watching over us and keeping us strong in the faith of Jesus Christ during this Advent season. My tiger moment began 10 years ago. I was single and more than anything wanted a husband and a happy life. One night before going to sleep, I prayed to God for a husband then finished the pray with a deep faith knowing that God would answer my prayer. A few weeks later I joined an online dating site. I did not post a photo, only my bio. I received an answer by email with a photo and a bio. To my suprise and amazement, it was from a man I had casually met 17 years ago at a fellowship meeting. At the time I had a secret crush on him but the crush went nowhere.
After gaining my composure, I replied to his email and we started dating, and after a year were married in my Church.
We have been married for 8 years now. We have a Christ based marriage and home. God has been so very good to us. He continues to bless us everyday.
There seems to be a "travel gene" in my family. Though our roots are in Wisconsin, we have branched to several states, and even a few other countries. I have that travel gene.
In 2004, while living in Canada, I received a copy of Daily Guideposts 2005 for Christmas. That book anchored me as my health, my marriage and my career all failed. It wasn't until 2006 that a very large, slow-growing, Stage II cancer was discovered. But, thanks to DGP2005, I had solidified my habit of daily prayer and found many new, supportive friends and prayer partners. Sadly, my husband was unable to share my joy, to the point of renouncing Jesus and Christianity. We were unable to reconcile, and he has since married another, in a Christian church which neither of them attends.
I haven't forgotten the Tiger Moment! As I recovered from my surgeries, I began to look for work. Jobs in my field were plentiful, but my former boss had blacklisted me before the cancer was diagnosed and none would hire me. Since I could no longer work in Ontario, I put my resume on a job site in the US, hoping to return home. I prayed for guidance and enlightenment for many weeks. Finally, I received 3 excellent offers, widely spaced across the US in about a week's time. I continued to pray.
One afternoon during my prayers, I appeared to be standing above the North Pole looking down at the US spread before me. The east coast was on my left, the midwest before me and the west coast to my right. Suddenly, I was in the Arizona position, hot, dusty, dry, dangerous, surrounded by tan and orange sands swirling around me. I stepped back and found myself above again. I went into the Illinois post. It was bleak: black, gray, dark green, cold, wet, sad. I stepped to my left, into the Maryland position. I couldn't enter it without a blessing! It sparkled and shone brightly as I looked at it. I continued praying, and Maryland glowed more brightly than ever.
Since coming to Maryland, I have found peace and friendship in my church, and even brought new friends to meet the Lord of Love. I have met a man who is willing to wait until I am ready before we marry. He and I are happiest teaching each other about the Bible and exploring histories: mine, his, local, church and Bible history.
I still read DGP, now nearing the end of 2011. Daily Guideposts have been my "Tiger Moment", giving me the strength to live and the courage to explore God's Word.
