'Get Low': an Inspiring Story About Forgiveness

Have you ever heard that Tennessee tall tale about an old hermit who threw his own funeral party—while he was still alive?

If not, it's the legend of Felix "Uncle Bush" Breazeale, who made national headlines in 1938 for doing just that. He wanted to know what people would say about his life at his funeral.

Silver screen legend Robert Duvall brings Uncle Bush back to life for another go in his newest film, Get Low. Also starring Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray, it explores the reasons behind why one man would want to be alive at his own funeral. Duvall told me in a recent interview that he believes those reasons are spiritual, faith-based. (Watch our latest Reel Inspiration for snippets from our interview!)

"It's like some of the preachers used to say, they thank the Lord for one more day above the ground. I think that's what get low means to [Felix Bush]."

Duvall's "Felix Bush" character is a gruff old man who has repressed a tragedy in his young life and punished himself by living in complete solitude for 40 years. His reclusive personality sparks all kinds of crazy rumors and tall tales among townsfolk, who generally dislike him. But after he hears about the death of an old friend, he comes out of hiding with his far-fetched living funeral idea.

It's really a movie about the courage it takes to seek forgiveness from others, from God, and from oneself. It's equal parts funny, inspiring and realistic, and will uplift you without a doubt. It hits theaters July 30 in New York and Los Angeles, and will be coming soon to a theater near you.
