Seeds of Devotion

A Prayer for Life with Teenagers

I have a simple rule for life with teenagers. When a kid starts getting argumentative or difficult, I pray.

It’s always the same prayerHoly Spirit, give me the words.

I pray it before I speak. Holy Spirit, give me the words. Sometimes I need it each time I open my mouth: Holy Spirit, give me the words.

At times I hear wise things coming out of my lips, calm observations that I know were not in my head even a split second before. Other times nothing comes to mind, and I know to be silent.

Holy Spirit, give me the words.

I'm only heading into teen years, but am at the pre-teen stage when the hormones are beginning to surge. Your words caught my attention. I so needed this reminder! Thank you.

One of my favorite quotes is, "Lord, put your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth." I haven't always been successful at that, especially when my boys were teens, but it does make you stop and think.
