Angels in Bloom: Buddy’s Easter Blessing

A grieving grandmother's faith is restored each spring with the arrival of Easter.

Any day now my granddaughter was expecting her first child. I decided to plant a butterfly bush in honor of the baby’s birth.

Butterfly bushes required a lot of special care, and my great-grandson would too. He would be born with serious birth defects. We were determined to enjoy every day God gave us with him. I hoped the explosion of purple blossoms would uplift us all in the difficult times ahead.

That day I got the call we’d been waiting for. Buddy was born! I visited him in the hospital, where he spent most of his short life. Buddy lived to be 11 months old.

Back home after the funeral I went out to the garden. The butterfly bush was in full bloom. It didn’t seem right that it would outlive my great-grandson.

Butterflies flocked all around it. Gorgeous butterflies who’d been transformed. Buddy had been transformed too, from a sick little boy on earth to a joyful soul in heaven. His “life” was just beginning.

Every spring the butterflies flock to Buddy’s bush to remind us of the joy that awaits us all.
