For years my husband, Phil, and I helped assemble the Nativity in his parents’ front yard. My favorite figures were the mechanical angels: tiny lights wound around their frames and when you plugged them in, their white wings moved up and down.

Seeing them illuminated each Christmas, watching over Joseph and Mary and Baby Jesus, reminded me that angels were watching over my family too.

One year after we came inside, Phil looked down at his left hand and gasped. “My wedding ring!”

“When was the last time you saw it?” I asked.

“Just before we went out to set up the Nativity.”

The band must have slipped off Phil’s cold finger. We searched the yard. His parents came out to help. As I lifted the angels to look underneath, I said a prayer: Lord, we’re going to need a real angel to find this ring!

We searched for days with no luck. Finally Phil went to a jeweler and purchased a new ring.

The following December we pulled the Nativity set out of the closet again. I picked up a box that stored one of the mechanical angels. Something silver glinted at the bottom—Phil’s ring!

Angels had helped us find it after all. They were watching over the little family in the manger, and my little family too.
