Afflicted by disease as a girl, St. Teresa of Avila's prayers to be cured were answered. She entered a Carmelite house at the age of 17, but was soon stricken again and was never again fully healthy. She still managed to write extensively and founded many convents. Hence, she is a patron saint of those who are ill.
