Chasing the Light

Looking for the perfect setting for a pine cone

Photo of a pine cone by Judy Royal Glenn

Photographers go through a lot to get the perfect shot. They want everything in the photograph to be perfect, especially the light.

My husband found a beautiful pinecone for me to photograph. Now I needed the perfect light and background.

I found this rock on the trail to Desoto Falls in Georgia. It was covered in a layer of moss, and the texture of the pinecone looked great against the green color but would the light cooperate?  We were in a very shady part of the forest, and the sun dazzled in and out as I was photographing the pinecone.

Almost 100% of the time, I use my tripod to stabilize the camera, especially in low light situations. In this case, it was too cumbersome to set up the tripod and do so quickly before the light went away.

I was chasing the sunlight that day to try to capture the perfect photo. The important question to ask is: Are we chasing the light
