Guideposts Chats with ‘The Song’ Stars Ali Faulkner and Alan Powell

The stars of The Song sat down with Guideposts to share the inspiring message of their new film, a retelling of the story of King Solomon.

Ali Faulkner: Hello Guideposts, my name is Ali Faulkner and I play Rose Jordan in the upcoming film, The Song.”

Alan Powell: Hello Guideposts, my name is Alan Powell. I was in the film called The Song.” The song is a modern-day telling of the life of Solomon. I played Jed King, which is actually the Solomon character. He’s a singer/songwriter who gets propelled the stardom after writing a song for his wife called The Song.

And then, you know, really just dealing with prioritizing your family in the midst, the distractions of life.

AF: How much of me is in Rose? People ask me that question all the time. And I hope that I’m as much of rose as possible on my best days. She served as an inspiration to me in the way that she lives her life. It’s certainly opened my eyes to ways that I want to live mine.

AP: There are a lot of similarities that I share with Jed. Certainly one of them is the fact that I’m a musician as well. And so I know what it’s like to be gone a lot. Honestly, I know what it’s like to be gone too much and the strain that that can put on your marriage, and the difficulties that that can place on you as a father.

Hoping to tell the story in a way that would inspire other people not to do that, not to make those kinds of mistakes that I made. One of the things I think is really cool about this film: It’s about prioritizing your marriage, prioritizing your family.

AF: It’s a message of hope for relationships, for marriages, for love.

AP: I hope that the couples who are in a tough spot or have gone through some difficult things will see that as an example to go, ‘This is not going to be easy and it’s not going to be quick, but it’s certainly going to be worth it. And we’ll do whatever it takes to make this thing work.’

AF: To see that the relationships have meaning, the have purpose, and to realize that they are true gifts. True gifts of love. And in that way, hopefully inspire them to cherish them.

AP: And I’ve heard on a couple of occasions that people, as they’re walking out of the theater maybe even before they left, had to call their spouse, had to call their husband, had to call their wife and just say, I just want you to know that I love you. And I feel like it’s kind of mission accomplished for us.

I mean, that was the point of the film, to make you think about the priority of your family and the beautiful, precious gift that they are. And that we need to place them above everything else here on this Earth. That’s really what matters.

AF: The music in the film is incredible; it really is. To me, what I always say is it’s interwoven into the film as sort of like its own character. Instead of seeing a couple of scenes and then they perform a song, seeing a couple scenes, then perform a song, the songs are actually woven into plot points. So you see really important parts of the film happened during a song, which makes it resonate even deeper.

AP: Faith is a huge part of my life. I would say that it’s the common denominator that runs through everything that I do in the same way that it was for Jed, even though he certainly made some mistakes and in a sense loses perspective of his life. I think that it’s always there for him as it is for me as well.

I think it plays into every decision I make, from the moment-to-moment how I’m going to treat a person that I just came in contact with to the overarching story of my life and what I want my life to be about. I mean ultimately as the realization that Jed comes to is one that I believe in: that without God life is meaningless.

AF: Yes, I do share with Rose a faith in God. My faith in God is very important to me. Trying to have hope that everything means something and there’s a point to all of it. And so I feel like, without my faith, that would be—I personally don’t know how I would get through every day.

AP: The shortest scripture in the Bible is two words; it simply says “Jesus wept,” which, to me, ultimately means that God cares. And right now in my faith in my life and in my relationship with other people, that’s one of the things that I’m learning more so than anything else is just that God genuinely cares for us. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve been through, what you’re doing, what you’re not doing, God cares. And so I’m kind of really being moved by that right now.

AF: So one of my favorite verses is Isaiah 40:31, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount with wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

That’s one of my go-to verses. I kind of grew up with that verse and it helps me any time when I’m at work, in life just by saying that. I think it’s just a very, very powerful verse. And I think that it’s one of those verses that it’s one that just links everyone together. That’s one that any person can say and feel a strength and a closeness to God. And so that’s one of my go-to verses for anything.

AP: Thanks for having me, Guidepost. Again, this is Alan Powell. I was in a film called The Song. Make sure you guys go check it out.

AF: Thank you so much for having me, Guideposts. And I hope you get to go check out The Song as soon as possible.
