Lost & Found: An Angelic Detective on the Case

The button on her favorite Christmas sweater had been missing for years. Surely, after all this time, it was a lost cause.

An artist's rendering of a Christmas sweater with jingle bells for buttons

Wearing Christmas sweaters had always been one of my favorite ways to celebrate the season. I’d collected quite a few, including my favorite, with tiny jingle-bell buttons. Each time they jingled I imagined an angel getting her wings.

When I noticed one of the buttons missing, I searched high and low for it–in the house, at work, inside our minivan.

Every Christmas since, I was tempted to wear my jingle-bell sweater, and then I’d remember why I couldn’t. But one day, in a rush to get to work, I threw it on.

I was halfway to the office before I realized I’d need a safety pin to get me through the day. There was no point in looking for the button again: I’d vacuumed the house hundreds of times since I’d lost it, I’d changed jobs, and a few years back I’d even traded in my old minivan.

Lord, help me let go of my favorite sweater.

At the end of the day I got back in my car to head home. As I reached for my seat belt, I noticed something shiny hiding in the carpet on the floor between the door and the seat–my button! I picked it up, and the bell jingled. An angel got her wings, and maybe a detective badge too.
