In my life, food and family have always been linked. If I wanted love, I went to the kitchen. Mom was there. Nana was there. I came hungry and left nourished…in body and soul. That sense of food to heal and create community was nurtured in Italy, where I studied Mediterranean cuisine under chefs and signoras from Florence to Sicily. Their attitudes and insights formed the foundation of my approach to health supportive foods: Food must taste great in order to be nourishing and healing. I’ve continued this journey professionally in venues such as the Commonweal Cancer Help Program where I’m a regular visiting chef.

In addition to my classes and consultations with the public, the growing recognition of the health-supportive role of food has allowed me to address many progressive physicians, nurses and health-care professionals. And I’ve authored a book about health-supportive eating, One Bite at a Time: Nourishing Recipes for Cancer Survivors and Their Friends, now in its third printing.
