From classics like It’s a Wonderful Life to comedies like The Preacher’s Wife, many movies have offered takes on what angels look like on earth. Here are seven of the best angel movies.
A young Joseph Gordon Levitt stars in this family friendly movie about the Anaheim Angels. Levitt plays Roger, a foster child whose father promises to bring the family back together if the Angels win the world series. Roger prays that God will intervene and a real life angel (played by Christopher Lloyd) appears to help the Angels kick their losing streak.
It’s fitting that one of the most beloved Christmas films of all time features one of the most beloved angels. It’s a Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, a good-hearted man who falls on hard times and contemplates ending his life. Help comes to him in the form of Clarence (Henry Travers), an angel seeking to earn his wings who is determined to remind Bailey of the simple wonders of his life.
This 1998 movie follows Seth (Nicholas Cage) an angel who accompanies people as they make the transition to the afterlife. But when he meets and falls in love with Maggie (Meg Ryan), he questions whether he should become human to stay with her.
This charming film is a remake of the The Bishop’s Wife, starring Denzel Washington as Dudley, an angel sent to assist struggling pastor Henry (Courtney B. Vance). Trouble ensues when Dudley falls for Henry’s wife Julia (Whitney Houston).
Warren Beatty co-wrote, co-directed and starred in this classic 1970s film. Beatty plays Joe Pendleton, a professional quarterback whose guardian angel (Buck Henry) accidently sends him to heaven before his time on earth is up. Mayhem ensues when the two hatch a plot to send Pendleton back to earth.
Nora Ephron directed this fantastical comedy about two journalists and an angel expert who set out to investigate a man named Michael (John Travolta), a cigarette-smoking womanizer—who also claims to be an angel.
This quirky comedy stars Robert Downey Jr. as Thomas, a man who realizes that his imaginary childhood companions weren’t actually imaginary—they were angels. The four guardian angels recruit him to help complete their journey to the afterlife.
