‘Beyond the Mask’: Faith and Family Filmmaking

My heart was touched by the film, Beyond the Mask, and I can’t wait for my family to see it. I hope yours will as well. Our culture needs more redemptive stories.

Popcorn and a movie make a great combination—but sometimes a movie becomes even more enjoyable when we learn the story behind it. That’s the case with Beyond the Mask, which opens Friday, June 5.

I flew to Detroit last week as part of the press junket for the premiere–a big difference from a Hollywood red carpet event. As I interviewed the actors and producers, I noticed tears in their eyes as they shared about the film and what God had done along the way.

Director Chad Burns and producer Aaron Burns (two homeschooled cousins) are taking faith and family filmmaking into the action-and-adventure arena (think National Treasure meets Indiana Jones). Add in gorgeous locations (including a stunning castle), period costumes and special effects, and you’ve got a fantastic film. But it’s the inspiring themes of redemption, forgiveness and love that put it over the top.

Michelle Cox talks to Ade M'Cormack of Beyond the Mask. The movie’s main theme is about the masks we wear and finding our true identities. As seen so often on social media, we put out there what we want people to see and hide the rest.

“We find our true identity in Christ,” says Chad. It’s a message they hope will resonate with those who see the movie.

The two also shared that making the movie had strengthened their faith. For one, they were crying out to God for the film’s funding, and on the last day of the deadline, the exact amount they needed came in.

And there were production challenges, like figuring out how to build a ship or a true-to-the-period city street. But, again, God provided, and the cousins were amazed by the 400+ people who volunteered to help.

Here’s where the rest of us come in—if we want more movies that the entire family can watch, then we’ve got to support the filmmakers who create them. The people involved in this movie have been praying for it and for those who will be moved by its story—and they told me that they’d love to have you pray with them.

Beyond the Mask opens on June 5. Visit their website for more information about the movie, study guides, a church packet for pastors, and video clips.

Lord, we’re so grateful that you see beyond the masks we wear and that you love us anyway. Along with these young filmmakers, we thank You for the gifts of redemption and forgiveness. Help us to share the message of your love with others. Amen
