Finding Beauty in Your Own Backyard

You don’t have to travel to find something wondrous. Just look out your window right now. What do you see?

Appreciating the beauty of fall in your own backyard.

My sister and I are headed to Italy soon for vacation. I can hardly wait to track down wonders–and, of course, pizza!–abroad. I have many spiritual spots on my must-see list, from catacombs to the Vatican.

As excited as I am to take a Roman holiday, though, the other day I was reminded just how lovely home is too. I went up to my parents’ house, outside New York City, for the weekend. My dad picked me up from the train station. I didn’t really pay much attention to my surroundings while in the car. I was too busy catching up with my dad.

It was only once we got to the house that I noticed the trees outside. The leaves–they were glorious! Brilliant reds, oranges and yellows.

I know, I know. Leaves change colors in the fall, that’s kind of their thing. But, now that I live in the city, I don’t really get to witness the trees’ dramatic transformation every autumn. I stared out the kitchen window of my parents’ house, mesmerized.

“Oh my goodness,” I said to my dad. “Look at how beautiful the trees are!”

“I know,” he said. “We take it for granted.”

At his words, it hit me. How much beauty exists everywhere. And how you don’t have to travel very far to find it. The rest of the weekend, I paid special attention to the trees and spent some quality time outside just to enjoy their leafy company.

What about you? Have you been struck by any natural wonders this fall? Share your photos or stories below!
