When It’s Time to Let Go

Is God asking you to let go of something? Maybe he has a bigger blessing waiting.

When it's time to let go so God can give you something better.

My two-year-old grandson, Nolan, is smitten with keys, constantly asking for his daddy’s key ring. “Where my keys?” is a frequent question heard at his house, and his little face beams as he walks around with them jingling in his hand.

I’ve been afraid my son’s house and car keys might end up in never-to-be-found-again land, so I started looking for some keys for my little guy so he could have his own.

I found a Mickey Mouse key ring. Then I looked at several stores to see if I could buy some inexpensive blank keys, but it was going to cost in excess of $20  to buy enough for a nice set.

And then, while I was in an arts and crafts store, I found a pack of twenty keys in the jewelry department. This grandmama was excited!

With a coupon, and my (ahem) senior citizen discount, it would just be a couple of dollars for all of them, and I knew my little buddy was going to be thrilled.

The next night at church, I said, “Nolan, Grandmama’s got a surprise for you!” I pulled out the pack of keys and his big blue eyes sparkled with excitement.

In just a few moments, those chubby little hands were filled with keys. He played with them all through church, stacking a few of them on the pew while he kept a tight grip on the rest of them.

After church was over, my husband told Nolan, “Granddaddy brought you some candy,” and he held out a piece for the little guy—but Nolan wouldn’t turn loose of his keys.

Paul tried to take the keys out of Nolan’s hand to hold them so he could eat his candy, but he kept a tight grip on them and put his hand in his pocket to keep his keys safe.

And then God whispered to my heart, “You know, you’re just like that sometimes. I say, ‘I have something for you,’ and you reply that you’re not turning loose of what you’re holding onto so tightly. Just like the candy for Nolan, I had something better for you. All I asked was for you to let go of one dream or one project, to let Me hold it for you.”

But just like my little buddy, I wouldn’t turn loose.

And then God whispered again, “What you didn’t know, was that I wasn’t going to take it from you. I had another bigger blessing to give you, too. You could have had both of them . . . if you’d just turned loose of what I asked you to let go of.”

I wonder how many blessings I’ve missed as a result of that?

Friends, is God asking you to turn loose of something today? Maybe He has something better waiting for you. Wouldn’t it be a shame to miss it?
