Gratitude Challenge–Part 6

Guideposts blogger Diana Aydin continues her gratitude challenge this Thanksgiving season, finding thanks in old friends, new colleagues, kale salads and quirky sweaters.

Diana Aydin's gratitude challenge continues this Thanksgiving season by giving thanks for old friends, new colleagues and kale!

I’m almost done with my Gratitude Challenge. One lesson I’ve learned so far? Don’t keep your gratitude inside!

Take, for instance, this comment I received on one of my blogs from Jule Koch:

“For the last few years I’ve cultivated having a thankful heart in all circumstances, and I can testify that it paid off BIG TIME in the last few months when I was having chemotherapy. Sure, the treatments were miserable and there were the usual disasters (like coming down with shingles too), but no matter what happened I would feel this thankfulness bubbling up naturally–I didn’t have to manufacture it. Food tastes horrible? Yes, but I don’t have mouth sores. Pain from the shingles? Yes, but I can breathe easily. Tired? Yes, but my bowels are working properly, thank the Lord!”

What an honest, heartfelt expression of gratitude! It left me feeling inspired and grateful for the small wonders in my own life. Almost like Jule’s thankfulness set off a domino effect of gratitude.

So let your gratitude shine, thank the people you’re grateful for, share your miracles and blessings. You never know who might be inspired!

What about you? What are you thankful for right now?

Gratitude Challenge, Days 16-17

1)  A new colleague…and a kale surprise.
In September, my fellow editor and work bud, Dan Kessel, left Mysterious Ways. This past week, a new Dan took his place – Dan Hoffman, our new assistant editor! To celebrate, the Mysterious Ways crew went out to lunch. It was nice to take a break from work and get to know my co-workers a bit better. And my meal happened to be surprisingly delicious–a kale salad. Who knew kale was so good?<

2)  Old friends.
Talking about co-workers, I’m so thankful for former colleagues too. Like old Dan, who, come to think of it, was always talking about kale! I’ve met so many lovely people at my various jobs over the years. Colleagues who’ve become true friends.

3)  A good morning.
Last Thursday, I left my apartment at 7 a.m. in hopes of getting to work early. Halfway to the office, though, I realized I’d forgotten my work I.D. badge at my desk the night before. Nobody would be in the office that early to let me in, so I went back home and worked there until 9 a.m. My sister Priscilla was ready for work early too. She was sleepy, but cracking jokes left and right. I’m so glad I forgot my badge–I got some work done and started my day with laughter.

4)  Friendsgiving.
All month I’ve been giving thanks, but also planning “Friendsgiving,” aka a pre-Thanksgiving celebration with three of my friends. Half the fun is the preparation. All last week, my friends and I discussed the logistics of the event like we were planning a White House dinner. The experience made me thankful for friends who also geek out over fake holidays!

5)  A quirky sweater.
A few years ago, I was passing through a store and spotted the most fabulous sweater. A gray cardigan with bright, neon flowers. Not embroidered or printed flowers, but actual fabric flowers blooming from the sweater. There was just something about it. The only problem? It was in the children’s section. I searched for the largest size available and it actually fit! It seemed like a funny purchase at the time, but that sweater has sparked so many conversations. Every time I wear it, someone comments on it, even strangers. What a conversation piece!
