The Longest Wait

With photography, there is the “right” time. With God, there isn’t.

Dandelion. Photo by Judy Royal Glenn.

I found a dandelion the other day and wanted to photograph it. I was not at home when I found it, so I had to carefully get it to my car then home. One gust of wind and my dandelion would be ruined.

The question was how did I want to photograph it? Much of photography is about the background surrounding the subject, and I had no clue how to merge the two for this photograph.

I taped the dandelion to a ruler, put the ruler in a vase, and put it on the kitchen table. I set my camera and tripod up and when I looked through the lens, I noticed the beautiful fall colors through my window. I knew now how I wanted to photograph it!

The light coming in from the door to my deck shone perfectly on the dandelion. I just needed to get the top kitchen window open because the grilles on my window were a distraction in my shot.

My husband and I tried to get the window open for what seemed like an eternity, but it would not budge. I don’t think the upper window had been opened in over 10 years.

He suggested opening the bottom window and putting the vase on the floor. I put the vase on a chair and was able to photograph a little but the light soon faded.

I still was not satisfied with my shots, so I tried the next day, but we had to go to Sunday school before the light came through the door. The next day it rained. Finally, the day after, the light was perfect, and the colors were beautiful.

I was trying to photograph the dandelion at the “right” time, but we don’t have to wait till we are “right” to come to Him. We don’t have to wait till we think we have it all together or that we can’t come to Him because we are not perfect or not good enough.

He is the light and is always there even if the clouds are out or there are other distractions. Don’t wait!
