Heavenly Memories of a Beloved Son

A grieving mother is comforted by the vocal gifts of Elvis Presley.

Not a day went by that I didn’t miss my son, but some days were worse than others.

It had been nine years ago exactly that my son Patrick was killed in a car accident, and I was surfing online, trying to distract myself on this difficult anniversary.

“You have to find a good song for us to dance to at my wedding,” my son Chris had asked. I typed “mother of the groom songs” into a search engine. As I scanned the list of titles, one stood out: “Memories” by Elvis Presley.

Memories of Patrick are all I have left of him, I thought. I went to YouTube and clicked on the video of a young Elvis serenading his audience: “Memories pressed between the pages of my mind,” he sang. “Memories sweetened through the ages just like wine.” I glanced at the top of the screen and saw the words Patrik Loves You. I gasped. Whoever had uploaded the video to YouTube went by that moniker.

I chose a different song for my son Chris and me to dance to at his wedding. But whenever I want to remember just how much my son Patrick still loves me from heaven, all I have to do is listen to our song.
