Use this Scripture to experience God's favor and goodness in your life.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Numbers 6:24–26 (NRSV)
As winter approached this year, I nestled a few of my Gerbera daisies under the patio for protection. One day I noticed a white, powdery mildew forming on the leaves, so I cut away the sick ones. On one plant, all that remained after my pruning was one yellow daisy standing tall in the center.
Weeks passed, including some freezing nights. But each day I looked out the back door, I saw that stoic yellow flower smiling at me. A month later, still that singular, sweet face appeared unchanged, like Jesus Himself was smiling on me. I gazed at it, amazed. Never had I grown a flower whose blooms remained intact for an entire month, especially in cold weather.
I think Jesus knew I needed that simple object lesson. New attempts at improved health in my life were generally working; yet some days, symptoms like joint pain or fatigue reappeared. Like the powdery mildew on those flowers, they tried to sap my joy and energy. In addition, almost daily, e-mails were filling up my in-box from discouraged people asking for prayers. So many needs! What and how should I pray for them?
That’s when Jesus reminded me of that little daisy and a simple prayer of blessing in the Bible. I would ask Jesus to bless and keep them, to make His face shine on them, to lift up His countenance on them, to be gracious, and to give them peace. And in my heart, I knew He would because that’s what Jesus is doing for me.
FAITH STEP: Write down Numbers 6:24–26 on a piece of paper and put it in a prominent place. Make that your daily prayer for others—and for yourself this year.
