Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.—1 Peter 3:3 (NIV)

For months, I drove by a house while the owner built a shed on his front lawn. I’d never seen a small project take so long, nor a utility building so equipped and beautifully adorned. Maybe he went all out because it’s visible from the street. It has electricity for the beautiful lanterns that hang near the front door, plumbing for a spigot to water the bright flowers in boxes placed beneath the windows and shutters, and a fancy copper weather vane perched on the cupola that glistens in the sun. 

What’s even more perplexing is that even though the shed is so detailed, the owner never bothered to build a solid foundation underneath it. Instead, it sits on concrete pylons placed under the frame. I can’t help but compare that masterpiece to what our culture has become with so much emphasis on outward appearance. A solid foundation seems to be a forgotten detail, an afterthought. I know lasting happiness is as elusive as the wind when my focus is on outward, shallow things. 

As a believer, I strive to build the foundation of my life on Jesus and His teachings. My Redeemer is solid and true, trustworthy and strong. When my choices are made while looking through the lens of His love and faithfulness, outward appearances, even outer circumstances, don’t seem to matter. Instead, faith, hope, and love are built in my heart, soul, and mind—beautiful adornments for others to see.
