Got Time for God?

Sometimes it seems there just aren’t enough minutes in a day. But we need to put God first. I’ll let you in on a little secret…

Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. (Psalm 119:97)

OK, fess up! Do you make time for God? Did you plan on getting up early to read your Bible but hit the snooze button one too many times and slept right through your God time? Or did you plan to read his Word and start that new devotional book after dinner but opted to watch The Voice instead?

I know. Your daily schedule is super packed. You work all day. Then, there’s that long commute home. And let’s not even go into all of your extracurricular activities, household chores and time-consuming commitments! From choir practice to helping your kiddos with homework to going to the gym to grocery shopping to coaching Little League–life is crazy! Plus you have family, friends, pets… the list goes on! There just aren’t enough minutes in a day, right?

I am right there with you! I have trouble finding time for God, too. It seems there are a million things that need my attention, and sometimes I put off my “God time” until the end of the day, and then I’m too tired to really focus on the Scriptures I’m reading or pray without falling asleep.

But you know what? We need to put God first. I’ll let you in on a little secret: If you put God first, he will increase your time. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true! Whenever I make time for God, I somehow get everything else on my “To Do” list done! It’s nothing short of a miracle!

Apparently I’m not alone. I recently read an article by an inspirational speaker Gloria Copeland, who shared that she had just moved into a new house and needed to unpack the sea of boxes surrounding her, as well as care for her two small children. However, in the middle of her very full days, she felt impelled to read through the four gospels, four times in a month. She thought, How am I ever going to have time to do all of this Bible reading and get this house in order? Still, she made it a priority. At the end of the month, she had not only accomplished her reading goal, but also unpacked the whole house and refinished a few pieces of furniture, as well! She had given God her time, and he had given it right back to her.

God will do the same for you. Make a decision today to spend time with your Heavenly Father, no matter what! Because it’s during those precious moments spent in God’s presence that we truly get to know our Lord. And we receive his divine direction and supernatural power to carry out the plan he has for our lives. Pretty soon, your God time will become your favorite time. You’ll look forward to it–even more than The Voice.
