Experiencing the Bible in a New Way

Rick Hamlin discusses the insights gained from a contemporary translation of the Bible.

[MUSIC PLAYING] I read the Bible every day for knowledge, for wisdom, for inspiration, also, just practical help. There are over 40 translations of the Bible in English.

Lately, I’ve been using this translation, “The Daily Life Bible.” It’s very contemporary language. And it’s a way of hearing things a little differently.

I like reading the Book of Romans. I like reading Paul’s letters. It’s the first document we have of Christianity, what it means to be a Christian. But it can be very dense language.

But in this translation, there was something new. For instance, Paul writes, “People who are self-centered aren’t able to please god. But you, you Romans aren’t self-centered. Instead, you live in the Spirit.”

It’s an incredible contrast. Self-centered and live in the Spirit. And it’s said to me that if I’m self-centered, and I am at times, I’m not allowing the Spirit of God within me. And just like that, [SNAPS] a phrase that was almost 2,000 years old sounded new and vital to today.
