Esther Bunny

The Angels on Earth editor-in-chief shares a moment with her daughter at Build-a-Bear workshop.

My seven-year-old Evie loves stuffed animals. So every Easter, besides the chocolate bunny the Easter Bunny leaves in her basket, Evie gets a stuffed bunny too.

This year we went to Build-A-Bear in the mall to pick one out together. You probably know you can build (that is, stuff) almost any kind of animal you want at that place—bears are just the beginning.

We walked in, and Evie made a beeline for a floppy-eared bunny with pink flowers stamped all over its chenille skin. Very Evie! She stuffed the bunny, and gave it a hug test to make sure it was just right for sleeping with. Then she kissed the puffy little red heart every child inserts in her animal before it’s stitched up.

“I’ll call you Esther,” Evie said, “Esther Bunny. And your heart will love everybody.” What a great name! What an angelic wish! Both very Evie.

“Can we buy just one outfit for her?” she asked. Evie had no trouble choosing: Esther Bunny wears wings and a halo. I think Evie should too.
