Adopt-A-Cat: Keren

Guideposts’ copy chief Keren Baltzer tells of receiving a surprise gift — and a friend for life.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Mon Ami is on my left and Son Amie is on my right. Mon Ami is actually two years older than Son Amie. She’s six and he’s four. I first laid eyes on Mon Ami when she was six weeks old after my husband and I had been separated for about six weeks while I was in France finishing my masters. The night I flew home it was 4 o’clock in the morning. And he said, you have to unwrap your present right away. And I thought, I’ve been on a seven-hour flight, it’s 4 o’clock in the morning, and there’s no way I can unwrap a present right now.

But he insisted, and so we walk into the apartment and the light was on with the bathroom door shut. So in my very sleepy state, I thought that he had painted our bathroom a different color for me. But instead, he opened the door and there was this tiny little six-week-old kitten. And it was actually wonderful, because since he was leaving for two weeks, she became the perfect companion for me.

And then a couple of years later, we had, we were in Ohio visiting family. And we’re at a friend’s home who had a kitten. And it was Son Amie. And Son Amie jumped up on Daniel’s shoulder and looked him right in the face and meowed. And we knew that he was the kitten that we needed for Mon Ami.

Mon Ami actually means my friend in friend and Son Amie means her friend. So Mon Ami was originally for me, and Son Amie was for her. But they’re both really my cats, since they don’t always get along. But they’ve been really great companions, and we love having them. And oh, and just a little bit about Son Amie, who is trying to escape, is he’s a Bengal, which you can see by his beautiful belly, he’s very spotted. And he’s got a huge personality to go with this beautiful coat.

And Mon Ami is an Abyssinian. And she’s a very much more mellow prissy cat. So it’s been fun to have cats with such strong personalities. Her personality is very prissy and kind of, we call her a 14-year-old teenage girl, because she’s very princessy and likes things just her way is very vocal about everything and the way it has to go. And so she’s got a very small body, but a very big personality.
