A Very Furry Angelic Visitor

A Washington family is blessed with an unusual Christmas guest.

A baby squirrel proves a welcome Christmas companion for a Washington family.

My husband, Ron, was doing some work in the yard when he came across a baby squirrel so young his eyes were still closed.

“He reached out his paws to me,” Ron said, cupping the fragile little animal in his hands. “He wanted me to pick him up.”

We set up a newspaper-lined cage in the basement and used an eyedropper to feed the squirrel powdered milk. A month later he was eating solid foods like pecans and walnuts. He was thriving.

“I bet the squirrel will love having a tree in the house,” my daughter said when we put up the Christmas tree. She was right. That gave me an idea.

“Let’s not put too many decorations on this year,” I said.

The kids didn’t understand it, but they did as I said. I got the squirrel cage from the basement and reached inside.

“Have a ball,” I said as I placed our bushy tailed friend on one of the branches.

We spent hours watching him jump from one branch to the next, his little arms stretched out wide as he flew through the air, having quite a Christmas celebration.

We released the squirrel back into the wild a few months later, but we’ll always remember our favorite furry holiday guest.
