A Reminder to Believe

On a trip to the beach, a breast cancer survivor receives an inspiring gift.

The word 'believe' inscribed on a seashell

White and Pristine waters. Fernandina Beach, Florida, was straight out of a postcard! The perfect spot for my husband, Don, and me to celebrate our forty-first wedding anniversary. Only one thing could top it off, I thought while looking through a bowl of shells in a gift shop.

Six years earlier I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, our daughter had surprised me with a simple necklace that said “believe.” It instantly boosted my faith. So much so that over the years Don and our son each gave me believe necklaces too.

After that, I found myself inspired to collect “believe” ornaments, angel figurines, candles, garden rocks, towels–even after I went into remission. But most of the time, the items seemed to find me!

I hadn’t even thought about finding a “believe” token in Florida, when I saw a bowl of small pewter seashells inscribed with words like trust, hope and love. I told the sales clerk about my collection and we searched and searched. None of the shells said believe.

“If I ever find one, I’ll shout ‘Believe!’ into the street for you,” the clerk joked.

“And I’ll come running!”

Don and I hit the shop across the street. No luck there either. Coming out, I heard a woman’s voice.

“Believe! Believe! Yoo-hoo, over here!” The clerk jumped up and down, waving something. It was a pewter shell… emblazoned with my favorite word!

“It appeared out of nowhere,” she said. “Take it as a gift.”

Today it sits proudly in my collection. One more precious reminder, as always, to simply believe.
