Everyday Angels: A Deer Friend

They weren’t sure how to continue their hike once they reached the rapids. But God knew who they should follow.

Guideposts Video: Inspiring True Stories

Hi. I’m Colleen Hughes, editor-in-chief of Angels on Earth. Here’s a true story about an everyday angel from Jenny Gilmore of Ferndale, Washington.

Angels come to us every day as a neighbor, an unexpected rescuer, a kind stranger, or a loyal pet. Listen now to a story of just such an everyday angel.

Jenny and her friend Carol went hiking in the Northwest Cascade Mountains. The trail brought them to a raging waterfall. It rushed across their path.

Jenny stopped to think. Should they cross at the shallow rapids, near the edge of the 600-foot drop or wade through the deeper water behind the falls? Should they just turn around altogether?

Jenny and Carol prayed together, show us the way to go, Lord. All of a sudden, Jenny felt something grab her pack. She was jerked backwards. She wheeled around. A large, tan-colored doe studied her. It deftly walked across the rapids, near the edge of the cliff, then it turned around and came back. The doe looked at Jenny and Carol, then it ambled off into the woods.

Jenny and Carol followed precisely in the doe’s footsteps. They safely forded the waterfall and finished their hike. The animal’s peculiar behavior might be hard for naturalists to explain, but for Jenny and Carol, it was as easy as not falling off a cliff.
