Everyday Angels: The Contest

It was a good thing she entered: The prize she won was a life-saver.

Guideposts Video: Inspiring True Stories

Hi, I’m Colleen Hughes, editor-in-chief of “Angels on Earth,” with a true story of an everyday angel from Christy Ortiz, Victoria, Texas. Angels come to us every day as a neighbor, an unexpected rescuer, a kind stranger, or a loyal pet. Listen now to a story of just such an everyday angel.

Christy never entered contests. But for some reason, this ad caught her eye. It said prize but didn’t say what the prize was. Nevertheless, she filled out the entry form and sent it in.

Imagine how thrilled she was when she won. Then Christy saw her prize– a coupon for a free mammogram. Not very exciting. But something had made her enter that contest. She thought, God, I’ll do it if you send an angel with me.

She had the mammogram but was told she needed more tests. She went, and then she got the news. She had breast cancer. That coupon was a godsend, the surgeon said. Without the mammogram, we wouldn’t have known.

Surgery, chemotherapy, and months of recovery followed. But things returned to normal, except now Christy thanks God each day for the best prize of all– her life, better and richer than ever before.
