Spotting Angel Wings

At New York City's Freedom Tower, seeing angels instead of sadness

Angels on Earth blogger Colleen Hughes

I have mixed feelings about working so near the Freedom Tower in downtown Manhattan.

The area is always crowded with tourists coming to visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and I find myself giving lots of directions when I go outside at lunchtime. But I haven't been to the museum yet myself.

I don't think I'm quite ready to relive that terrible day. Back then, our offices were still in midtown, across the street from the Empire State Building.

On clear days I liked to ride up to the observation deck and look all the way downtown. You could see the Twin Towers without even having to put quarters in the viewer.

My friend Celeste came back from lunch last week and showed me this picture.

"Saw this near the Freedom Tower and thought it looked like angel wings," she said. "The lighting isn't great, I know. But best I could do with my phone and time of day."

Celeste saw angels where I was seeing only sadness. I think it's time I visited that memorial.
