Pass It On: Free Kibble!

A devoted animal lover, she found a way to help care for dogs and cats in shelters, one bit of kibble at a time.

Helping animals is my passion. I started volunteering at the Humane Society at nine years old—as soon as they would let me!

At home, my family enjoyed playing the games on freerice.org, which donates 10 grains of rice to a global food bank for every trivia question that visitors answer. That gave me an idea—maybe people would answer trivia questions to give food to shelter animals too.

We created freekibble.com and freekibblekat.com. There’s a new question each day, and whether you get it right or not, you donate 10 pieces of kibble to animal shelters. At first, a pet shop donated the food, but now Halo, Purely for Pets, is our exclusive kibble sponsor.

Delivering the food to the Humane Society of Central Oregon the first time, I realized that if we were providing the food, shelters could pay for toys, bowls, beds, leashes—supplies that make life better and more fun for the animals.

That was in 2008. In August 2013 we started Freekibble Cares to spread the word about lesser-known animal-welfare organizations. We’ve also added freekatlitter.com to relieve shelters’ litter expenses.

We’ve fed more than 12 million meals to dogs and cats, keeping them happy and healthy until they find a forever home.
