This spring, I committed to getting healthy. I signed up for several 5Ks, laced up my sneakers and hit the road.

For extra motivation, I looked for a nonprofit to run for in a fitness app that collects donations from corporate sponsors for every mile you run. Girl Up caught my eye—I am one of three sisters and have a four-year-old daughter.

Girl Up, established by the United Nations Foundation in 2010, empowers girls in developing nations. Its School-Cycle program provides bikes so girls can quickly and safely get to school. Girl Up used to train American girls to advocate and raise funds for their sisters around the world, but other countries now host Girl Up clubs as well.

I want all girls to have the same opportunities that my sisters, my daughter and I had and will have. What a great reason to Girl Up and run those extra miles!
