Someone Cares: Yay, Mom!

How a stranger’s words warmed her heart and encouraged her to pass it on.

An artist's rendering of a mother and daughter smiling as a woman kneels down on one knee.

Parenting is hard work, especially when you’re new to it. One winter when our now-grown daughter, Esther, was a toddler, we took a trip to see her grandparents. In a restaurant ladies’ room, the fixtures were so different from ours at home, I gave her instructions on how to wash and dry her hands. An older lady stood in the corner staring at us the entire time. Was I intimidated!

After Esther had thrown her crumpled paper towel in the trash and I’d helped her with her mittens, the woman gave me a warm smile and said, “You’re a great mom.” I floated on air for days.

Now I’m the one who observes young mothers with their little ones. If a mom is patient and kind, I say, “You’re doing a great job” or “I love how sweetly you interact with your child.” Their smiles fill the room and warm my heart. Encouragement works wonders in all seasons.
