For months a mother had prayed for her suffering adult son. She asked God that somehow, through his resentments, he would clearly comprehend and respond to the Lord’s vast love. But her prayer seemed to go unanswered.
The man’s choices and actions caused his condition to deteriorate. As the mother quietly and competently tended to her son’s increasing physical needs, she began to seethe inside. The man was reaping the consequences of his own actions. Why had he acted so foolishly? His actions had created work and worry for her. Maybe she should leave him to care for himself. Then maybe he’d learn to act more prudently.
How would Jesus respond, the woman wondered, to someone who was suffering the consequences of his own failings and foolishness?
Moments later, her answer came—with clarity and authority: “My love is deeper than your son’s failure,” God’s Spirit told her. “You have prayed that he would know that. Today, be the answer to your own prayer.”
Lord, please help my suffering loved one know Your vast love. Enable me to act as a communicator and conduit of Your love.
