Pray the Psalms: Psalm 76

Watch as Rick Hamlin takes you through Psalm 76.

Guideposts Video: Inspiring True Stories

[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi, it’s Rick Hamlin. Psalm 76. You know, it’s amazing how just little things can get you down. I got on the subway to go to work. And as usual, I took up my little volume of psalms. Before I even looked at a psalm, I’d stepped in some gum, and it was sticky under my foot, and it just had me so irritated. It was one of those things that was going to drive me nuts. I was trying to scrape it off.

Well, I opened, and this time it was Psalm 76 that I was to. And I read the phrase, thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.

Suddenly I was away from the things that were irritating me into a whole different place, thinking about the magnificence of God, thinking about something much bigger than myself and the gum and the passengers on the train, and the things that I was worried about coming up during my day.

That’s why I like praying the Psalms first thing in the morning, because it sets me in a better path looking at bigger things, because when you have the bigger things in front of you, the little things– the gum, the stickiness under my foot– disappear.

I closed my eyes and I kept thinking of that passage. It went over and through my head. I like to meditate on a certain passage. And by the time I got off the train, I’d forgotten about the gum. Psalm 76.
