Everyday Angels: Special Delivery

Raisin bread may have been in short supply in their neighborhood, but an everyday angel proved that neighborliness was not.

Guideposts Video: Inspiring True Stories

Hi. I’m Colleen Hughes, editor in chief of “Angels on Earth,” with a true story of an everyday angel from Andrea Lozenski Shoenthal of Wellsville, New York. Angels come to us every day, as a neighbor, an unexpected rescuer, a kind stranger, or a loyal pet. Listen now to a story of just such an everyday angel.

Raisin bread was always at the top of Andrea’s mother’s grocery list, because that’s what her dad had eaten for breakfast every morning. Toasted with butter, it sent a warm cinnamon smell throughout the house. Andrea’s parents were an elderly couple living in Buffalo, New York. They didn’t have a car, so when it became difficult for them to get to the grocery store and do their shopping, they took a taxi.

One day, her parents went to a store after store in search of raisin bread. They were with a cab driver who had shuttled them around before. He wouldn’t let them give up their search. Finally, they headed home, no luck. The cab driver helped the man with their groceries. Andrea’s mother tipped him generously.

Later that afternoon, the doorbell rang. Andrea’s mother opened the door. There stood the cab driver, holding two loaves of raisin bread. Your tip was so big, he said, it was burning a hole in my pocket. Enjoy. Raisin bread was in short supply in Andrea’s parent’s neighborhood. But neighborliness sure wasn’t.
