The Comfort of Constancy

God’s love and help never wavers.

Comfort from God

Have you ever looked at pictures or videos from years ago? After dinner at a longtime friend’s house, he pulled out hundreds of old slides for our enjoyment. We laughed until we wiped away tears as we looked at friends with beehive hairdos—hair teased until it reached halfway to heaven—and fashions that were indescribable. Sadly, we were guilty of many of those style disasters.

For some of us, it’s a scary trip down memory lane. I look at pictures and cringe when I see that my eyeglasses looked like they covered half my face. My only consolation is that everyone else in that era was wearing the same huge hideous glasses.

And what were we thinking with sleeves the size of tablecloths and bell bottom jeans that dust-mopped the floors as we walked through a room? I went through all the stages—preppie, sporty, classic, minivan mom—and unfortunately, I didn’t rock any of them. I look back at my high school annual and wonder what in the world possessed me to wear those clunky wedge shoes, and even worse, those suede shoes with stars on them. And I’d thought I was so stylish!

Pictures are a reminder that life changes. Sometimes those are good changes, and other times they are situations where we never wanted to be. I’ll be honest: I don’t like change. So that makes me even more grateful for a God who never changes.

I have friends in my life who are always the same, even if it’s years later before I see them the next time. I love that quality in people. And even more, I love knowing that I have a God who is always the same.

Here’s what His Word says about that:

Psalm 90:2 says, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

In Malachi 3:6, God says, “For I am the LORD, I change not.”

Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

So what does that mean for us?

–The God who did miracles in the past can still do them today.

–The God who has cared for us throughout our lives can still care for us in the future.

–The God who has provided for our needs is still able to do that.

–The God who loved us in the past will love us for the rest of our lives.

Father, we thank You that You’re always the same. Thank You for what You’ve done for us in the past—and for the assurance that You will be with us in the future, no matter what we face. Amen.
