Kate Bosworth’s Inspiring New Film

Kate Bosworth stars in 90 Minutes in Heaven, based on the book by Don Piper, a pastor who underwent a near-death experience following a horrific automobile accident.

Actress Kate Bosworth stars in the upcoming movie 90 Minutes in Heaven (opening September 11), based on the bestselling book by Don Piper, a pastor who underwent a near-death experience following a horrific automobile accident. Kate portrays Eva, Don’s wife and caregiver, in the film.

“This is a story that’s about a traumatic experience that affected a family deeply and they overcame it,” Kate said of her new movie. “This is a story about the triumph of the human spirit, but it’s also a story about caregivers.” Our beautiful image of Kate was taken during an exclusive photo shoot with her for the August cover of Guideposts.

2 of 7 A Shared Prayer

Kate as Eva Piper prays for her husband, Don (Hayden Christiansen), right before a surgery he wasn’t supposed to survive. In explaining how she came to feel a connection to Eva, Kate said, “She made me a video on her phone of herself saying the exact words she prayed over Don from Jeremiah 29:11-12: ‘For I know the plans I have for you said the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.’ I memorized the verse. When we began filming, I said these words aloud and that’s when it happened, that out-of-body experience actors hope for, the moment when you and the person you’re playing become one.”

 “I’m a lot like Eva,” Kate told Guideposts.  “I wanted to get to know her on an emotional and spiritual level. We talked for hours before meeting face-to-face.  I found out that we’re both strong-willed, practical, energetic women who just want to go and get things done. When we met I ran over and gave her a huge hug. I just felt that I had known her forever. It was like meeting an old friend.”

Almost every bone in Don’s body was broken in the auto accident, and Eva was there for him every step of the way as he endured 34 surgeries, 122 days in the hospital and 13 months of recovery at home. This shot from the film captures a moment of tenderness between them, as portrayed by Kate and Hayden Christiansen.

5 of 7 A Quiet Moment in God's House

It fell to Eva to hold the family together, to work fulltime and take care of their three children while her husband got back on his feet after months of rehab. She was determined to do everything she could to bring Don back to a normal life. Prayer and their church community helped the Pipers immensely.

Behind the scenes of 90 Minutes in Heaven with Kate and her filmmaker husband, Michael Polish, who directed the movie. “When a movie is based on the lives of real people, you feel an enormous responsibility to get there story right,” Kate said. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the book came into Michael’s life around the same time I did. We both loved the Pipers’ story and were drawn to it. Perhaps because we saw something of ourselves in them.”
