Discover the Benefits of Praying for Others

Prior to joining Guideposts, I had no idea about the massive reach of its prayer ministry…

Prayer blogger Peola Hicks

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16).

What comes to mind when you think of volunteering? For me, I automatically think of “candy stripers,” those hospital helpers who would assist the nursing staff while wearing red-and-white-striped jumpers. Hospitals offered these volunteer positions as a way for people to gain experience and give back to their communities.

Whatever your idea of volunteering is, people typically choose a cause they believe in. Churches and other charitable organizations often use volunteers. For some it is the only way they can accomplish their goals. Volunteers are vital to the mission of OurPrayer, a service of Guideposts.

Prior to joining Guideposts, I had no idea about the massive reach of its prayer ministry. Millions of people are prayed for individually by name and need on an annual basis, which means that more than 5,400 people request prayer and are prayed for on a daily basis.

The beauty of the ministry is that prayer volunteers from every time zone around the world are praying. To be a prayer volunteer, you need not step foot out of your homes; with the use of a phone and access to the Internet, anyone can volunteer.

We have received many positive comments from our volunteers. Some of the most frequent are…

  • “Praying for others is therapeutic.”
  • “Praying for others has increased my own prayer life.”
  • “Praying for others on the phone is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.”
  • “Praying for others from the comfort of my home is so convenient.”

Are you passionate about transforming the lives of others? Do you have one to two hours per week? Can you believe that God hears and answers prayer? Do you have a phone or access to the Internet? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you can become a prayer volunteer. Or perhaps you could recommend a friend. We are praying for you.

Prayer Point: Eternal God, I ask that you move upon the hearts of your people, and show them the places where you would have them serve others. Thank you for being attentive to hearing the cry of our hearts. Thank you for your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God bless you!
